'buzzz buzzzz buzzz buzzzz buzzz'

Sorry, that was me being a busy bee!!! I have had a jam packed couple of weeks. In a way I shall be glad when this weekend is over...So much to organise and do!

I went away to Knock in the Lake District last weekend for a CU houseparty. It was amazing and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I helped cook for 60 people. Which was a task and a half!! I really hate preparing vegetables, but vegetables did I prepare!!! It was really good opportunity to get to know some of the newer members of CU and strengthen friendships I already had.

I go away to Whitby tomorrow with my church, which I am really excited about (and terrified about at the same time!). I am helping organise the young children, hehe, I get to make things for a few hours!!!! Talk about being in ones element!!!

In the meantime I have been putting the finishing touches to tomorrows Children in Need event. Me and VIcky have had a mean fete organising that one but it should be ACE all going well!! Must dash...my 30th batch of biscuits should be ready!! (only joking, it's only the 25th)

Hope to speak soon!!

The Barber...

Setting: a small rural community... so small in fact the only church in town is a small Baptist Church whose pastor must also double up as the local barber to make ends meet.

There happened to be a man in this small community who had invested wisely and was enjoying his new-found comfort. This man got out of bed one day to go through his daily routine. He looked into the mirror as he was about to shave and decided "I make enough money now... I don't have to shave myself. I'll go down to the barber and let him shave me from now on." So he did.

He walked into the barber shop and found the preacher/barber was out calling on the shut-ins. His wife, Grace, said "I usually do the shaves anyway... Sit down and I'll shave you." So he did.

She shaved him and he asked, "How much do I owe you?" "$25", Grace replied. The man thought that was somewhat expensive and that he may have to get a shave just every other day. Nonetheless, he paid Grace and went on his way.

The next day he woke up and found his face to be just as smooth as the day before. No need for a shave today, he thought to himself. Well, it was a $25 shave.

The next day he again awoke to find his face as smooth as a baby's bottom. "Wow!" he thought. That's amazing, as he normally would need to shave daily to keep his clean shaven business look.

Day 3 he woke up and his face was still as smooth as the minute after Grace had finished. Now, somewhat perplexed, the man went down to the barber shop to ask some questions.

This particular day the pastor was in and the man asked him why his face was as smooth as it was the first day it was shaven.

The kind old pastor gently retorted, "Friend, you were shaved by Grace... and once shaved, always shaved."

Caught between two worlds...

Have you ever been told something that is completely life changing? Something that changes your entire outlook on everything? You don't really know how to act, what to say, what to believe anymore. You want nothing more than to use your new found 'knowledge'. To use what you have learnt for the best. To embrace this new and exciting information that you have. But, you also don't want to become a completely different person, to forget the person you are, become blinded and completely suffocated by this new life. You don't want to lose all of your characteristics that people have known and loved for so long, things which make you 'you'. You don't want things to change completely. You don't want to become a 'robot'. You don't know how to change things? I have.

I'm feeling somewhat lost at the moment. I think this may be the closest I will ever come to having split personality disorder...(I probably shouldn't joke about that). I would say I am caught between a rock and a hard place, but I'm not. If anything I am caught between a desert and fields of green pasture and I'm sure you can understand which place I'd rather be in. I have come to another fork in the road. But this time I have the directions...I know which way I want/need to go. I guess I'm just scared of going. I'm scared to take the plunge, I'm scared of the consequences of changing, even though I know I want to, need to. I know that the positives, the benefits, the amazingness of my new gift will outweigh any reprocussions, by far. But I'm scared. I am scared of losing people I have, I am scared that if I have different priorities and different things mattering to me people won't want to know. I know I have different things to be thinking about and not everyone around me can appreciate this.

I think what I find most difficult is that I'm more aware of my failings. The times when I didn't do the right thing, didn't say what I should have said, when I am selfish, when I don't have the energy and I feel bad for it. I fail to reach my own targets, my own standards, let alone anybody elses. I'm confused because I do realise that this doesn't matter. It is ok to fail. No-one can be perfect. It's natural almost. But I feel guilty for it, it is very difficult thing to drop a 'lifetime' of bad habits, thoughts, values.

It is difficult to stop doing things that I don't necessarily want to do but are kind of reflex actions. It is difficult to know how to do that. How to become the person I know I can be, I know I want to be. It's also difficult toI dislike confrontation, I have no wish to consciously upset or offend anyone due to my own opinions, after all they are just opinions and I can't take them as fact. But at the same time, I have no wish to sit quiet and keep my opinions to myself. I guess it's difficult when your opinions are based on such a 'taboo' subject, when they have developed from a 'book' that a lot of people deem untrue. It is difficult to stand up for your opinion when a lot of people are violently offended and at times angered by what you believe. It would be so easy to go and hide in a corner, but I know that I can't. I know this won't help anybody. I have a lot of questions, and I think I have been given the answers, I'm just not sure I understand them. I'm not sure I am interpreting them correctly. I guess I'm struggling to find the right balance.

I guess I can only hope that those around me, friends, family, etc will be happy with my choices. I can only hope that they will either understand or accept changes I make. I guess I can only have faith that everything is under 'control' and that I will have teh right guidance. I will know what to say, what to do. I can only have the faith that whatever happens, whatever people think of me, things really will be ok. For the first time ever I realise that I am not alone, I am loved, I am wanted, I am needed, I actually make a difference, and I am Happy. I know this is good! At times I am so overwelmed with positive emotion that my whole body feels as if it is going to explode. I am intoxicated with life, love, and pure joy.

Monica...ok...predictable..but Ross???????

Which Friends Character Are You?

You are part Monica. You have a go-all-out nature. Your friends better watch out, because you play to win. Also, when it comes to order and cleanliness, you're a bit obsessive compulsive. Your best trait, however, is your thoughtfulness. You go to great lengths to care for your friends.
You are part Ross. You're intelligent and adored by your parents. However, your lack of social skills causes you to talk too much and try too hard. While your friends pick on you for your nerdiness, they better watch our for your rage.

Full House!

Yey. The first of my remaining housemates are due to arrive within the next 10 hours!!! And I should have all of them here by tea time!!! I am feeling very optimistic about this year. I can't believe it's my fianl year (of my degree anyway...) and I am positive it is still going to be fun!!!

Waterfall...

Well I am one fan of nature...but I'm not a particually big fan when it occurs in my living room. Today there was a very fast waterfall flowing from my living room ceiling, resulting in a rather fine river flowing over the living room carpet. Now me and my housemate have the lovely problem of dealing with lots of very soggy towels, electrical equipment, and drying out our carpet. Oh it's all fun fun fun!!

This has been a rather odd week. Probably my first emotional rollercoaster for a while. I don't like the stress that emotions seem to cause. It would be nice to be able to switch off ones feelings once in a while, it would definitely make life a lot less complicated!!!! But I guess we have to remember that without negative, how would we measure positive?

The blogging world

It would seem to me that the blogging world is not what it was. I remember a time that after not using the internet for a day or two I would have several posts to catch up on from numerous bloggers. Now it seems that people don't make the time to blog of feel blogging is irrelavent. People barely update from one month to the next. I like catching up with people by the exciting stories they can make up. The way people can make a mundane task such as washing up sound like hours of fun amuses me. Where have you gone bloggers of the E-world???? Yes, I realise that Without a blog, the stars roar, the girl smiles, the cloud moves. Without a blog, the tides change, the boys run, the oceans crash. The crowds roar, the days soar, the babies cry, without a blog. The moon glows, the river flows, the breeze warms, Life goes on. Life does go on. But they do make life a little more interesting at times. Plus it's a good way to hear about what friends are upto when you can't actually be with them.

Maybe I just need to have something more exciting to be thinking about?

They think it's all over...

...it is now!

Today is my last day at work. :-( I have to admit I am a little sad, I have made numerous friends here and had a lot of laughs! But that's the end of my summer and I must return to Durham and start the next chapter. I have a new house and a new set of housemates (Yey!- the last lot were awful!! :-P).

Life is full of comings and goings, whether it be people, objects, homes.... We must learn to embrace these, make the most out of every situation, cherish the memories we make, and learn to accept the losses.

Then, at last, we may be content.

Lol...everyone look on in awe!!

Yup. I went to an allotment AGM yesterday. I am the definition of cool!!!!! It has to be one of the most amusing things I have witnessed in a long time!! Lots of grumpy old men arguing over the size of a lawn mower and discussing drainage ditch lengths!! I learnt a few names by the end...Brian was especially grumpy and p****d everybody off!! My Dad has an allotment, not me, in case you thought I had gone completely crazy! I don't like soil...(unless it's very old and maybe an odd colour). I accompanied him to his meeting. He seems quite keen on his allotment. I think it's place of solitude. It's his and only his. So I think he should get as much encouragement as possible! So I shall endeavor to attend as many pub meetings as possible :-D

Hope everyone is ok!!

BORED...

...at work. Only 28 days to go though!!! Whoop Whoop!!!

By the way...anyone know where I can buy some acid??!!

Wednesday, August 8

Blood is NEVER blue!!!!

After having a rather serious lunchtime discussion...I decided to put things right!!! I myself believed the myth that de-oxygenated blood is blue so feel it is my duty to inform others like me! I'm afraid we were/are wrong!! Read the following reply regarding de-oxygenated blood

The blood in your veins is called venous blood.

What colour is venous blood?

When the haemoglobin in your blood combines with oxygen it turns bright red. When it loses oxygen it turns dark red. It may be described as dark crimson which reflects some blue but not enough to make it look blue or purple.

I have taken blood samples from veins many times and have donated blood many times and it always comes out of the vein as a very dark red colour. I have seen many blood agar plates kept in conditions where there is no oxygen--and the plates are dark red. I have taken blood with a vacuum syringe which contains no air at all. I have never seen the blood inside the syringe look blue.

Some people think that blood comes out of the vein and immediately turns red because it comes into contact with oxygen. When you watch blood coming out of your arm into a transparent tube, you realise that it is not contacting oxygen and it is a very dark red. In low light it almost looks black. When I first saw a bag of blood at the Red Cross I didn't recognise it at first because it was so dark red.

So why does the dark red blood look blue when it is in the veins? Veins are white, so the colour of the veins is not the reason.

It's because the light from the sun and light globes, etc is made up of many different colours and these are absorbed at different rates the deeper you go through the skin.
It's like what happens underwater...

I have been scuba diving and the deeper you go the less red you see unless you take a light with you. Everything looks blue, green or black. The water is absorbing the red end of the spectrum so that only blue light remains to be reflected. When you look into a deep swiming pool with a white bottom, it appears blue. Apparently skin does the same thing to the light. The deeper under the skin you go the bluer things look.

Then why does the skin of pale-skinned people turn red when they blush or become flushed? The tiny capillaries which carry the blood are so close to the surface of the skin that none of the red colour is filtered out.

But the blood in the veins which are a little further in under the skin look blue. Although it is really dark red!
